Many pregnant women wonder if it is safe – both for themselves and the baby in the womb – to be physically active during pregnancy. As a midwife, and pregnant myself, I asked myself the same question. The answer is a clear and unequivocal YES!
From rest to movement – a new perspective on pregnancy
In the past, pregnant women were often told to take it easy and avoid physical exertion. Fortunately, research has given us new insights. Today, health authorities recommend that pregnant women stay active – as long as it is adapted to their own shape and health condition.
What kind of activity is safe during pregnancy?
Most forms of moderate physical activity are safe for pregnant women. The most important thing is to listen to your body and adjust the intensity as your belly grows.
Safe and good activities can be:
- Walking, light jogging or dancing
- Swimming
- Pregnancy yoga
- Cycling
- Strength training with light to moderate weights
- Remember this when you exercise:
- Avoid activities with a high risk of falling or impact to the abdomen
- Drink plenty of water.
- Eat both before and after your workout.
- Avoid exercising in hot and humid weather
- Listen to your body – stop if you feel pain or discomfort.
